Farmers To Learn About Anaerobic Digestion At Demo

The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) is hosting a one-day event to explain anaerobic digestion (AD) to farmers.

The demonstration will take place on Wednesday (November 2nd) at the site in Hillsborough, and will involve practitioners and researchers giving presentations about the latest advances and developments in the industry.

Gary Lyons of AFBI will host the ‘On-Farm Small-Scale Anaerobic Digestion’ event, which aims at helping farmers gain a better understanding of the processes involved, access funding opportunities, and learn more about the current research regarding AD.

A spokesperson for the AFBI said: “There has never been a better time to explore collaborations with the research community as the UK government focuses its attention on industrial biotechnology.”

Funding can start from £10,000 in Business Interaction Vouchers and can exceed over £60,000, so it is worth knowing what finance is available for those who are interested in pursuing AD processes on their site.

All AD Network members can attend the event at no charge, with membership free when set up in advance at adnet@soton.ac.uk.

AD is being increasingly used in the UK, and last month Yorkshire Water was granted planning permission from Leeds City Council to build a sludge treatment and AD facility in the centre of Leeds worth £72 million.

The bio-energy site aims to reduce carbon emissions by 15 per cent and provide over half of the energy requirements for the wastewater treatment plant.
