Anaerobic Digestion & Biogas

Anaerobic digestion is the process through which bacteria breaks down organic matter such as food waste, wastewater biosolids and animal manure in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas as a result.

The process itself takes place within a sealed vessel called a reactor, designed and constructed in a site-specific way, and containing microbial communities that digest (or break down) the waste. Alongside biogas, digestate is produced (solid and liquid materials), which are then discharged from the digester.

Biogas

Biogas is made up of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, water vapour and trace amounts of other gases. It can be used as a form of energy to generate electricity, provide heat, power cooling systems and so on, as well as being purified to generate renewable natural gas. This can be used as part of the natural gas distribution system, or be used for vehicle fuel, energy products, bioproducts or alternative transportation fuel.

Digestate

If treated appropriately, the solid and liquid portions of digestate can be used as compost, soil amendment, fertiliser, animal bedding and as a foundation material for bio-based products.
