Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater treatment is vital for protecting both public health and the environment, with sewage treatment works an essential part of the water network, helping to maintain the health and safety of communities all over the UK.

When sinks or toilets are emptied, the wastewater goes down the drain and into a pipe that transports it into a larger sewer below ground. This sewer joins a network of other sewers and carries the wastewater to a treatment plant.

Here, large objects are removed and human waste is separated from water through the use of large settlement tanks, where the solids sink to the bottom (known as settled solids or sludge).

Large scrapers then move around the tank slowly and push this sludge towards the middle of the tank, where it is pumped away to be treated. Most of this sludge will be reused as fertiliser on farms, although it can also be used for energy production.

The resultant clean wastewater is returned to waterways, with wastewater quality strictly regulated and tested thoroughly before it enters the natural environment. If necessary, the cleaned water can be filtered through a bed of sand before being returned to rivers, lakes, streams or seas to ensure that it is clean enough.
